Drying Flowers

Whether you want to dry flowers from your garden for potpourri or aromatherapy treatment, try these easy ways to dry flowers.
  • You can put your flowers in a microwave oven for one to four minutes, depending on the density of the flower.
  • You can also dry flowers naturally which helps to preserve the color of the blossoms.  Dry rose heads and petals on paper towels in a warm, dry place such as the kitchen, the attic or garage.  Be sure to dry them in a single layer to avoid mildew.
  • Flowers can also be dried by hanging them upside down in a warm dry place.  Just secure the stems with a tight rubber band that will shrink as the flowers dry.  You can hang them from a length of heavy string or clothesline by hooking a paper clip through the rubber band and then onto the line.  You can also use them as a decorative accent by tying a ribbon around the stems as they are drying.
  • Flowers can be dried and pressed flat between pieces of blotter paper weighted down by heavy books or other weighted object.
When selecting flowers to dry, it is helpful to remember that white flowers will turn brown when drying and red flowers will turn black while drying.
