Although the aura has been described as a biomagnetic field that surrounds the body, the exact composition of one's aura is still a matter of debate.  Barbara Ann Brennan has developed the following system for defining the various layers of the aura along with the primary function for each level of aura.
First Auric Layer: Protection of life energies
Second Auric Layer: Screen feelings and emotions
Third Auric Layer: Filters ideas and beliefs
Fourth Auric Layer: Attracts and repels relationships
Fifth Auric Layer: Attracts, repels and sends guidance
Sixth Auric Layer: Opens to choices, enacts decisions
Seventh Auric Layer: Connects with spirits and Spirit; broadcasts spiritual decisions
Eighth Auric Layer: Broadcasts karma and absorbs powers
Ninth Auric Layer: Connects with others based on soul issues
Tenth Auric Layer: Mirrors beliefs, serves as a second self
Eleventh Auric Layer: Commandeers force
Twelfth Auric Layer: Links with energy egg, connects human and divine selves
The auric layers graduate from the body and are linked with the seven basic chakras.  The chakras also attune to different subtle bodies which combine to compose three basic planes: physical plane (composed of the mental body, emotional body and etheric body), astral plane (composed of astral body) and spiritual plane (composed of ketheric body, celestial body and the etheric template.)  These planes are accessible through the auric fields.  She also identifies two additional planes or levels beyond the ketheric body: these planes are associated with the eighth chakra and appears fluid.  The ninth is composed of a crystalline template.  Source: The Subtle Body by Cyndi Dale.
