To find the answer to a question, hold a stone over a bowl of water and ask a question that can be answered with a "yes" or "no."  Drop the stone into the water and carefully count the ripples it creates.  An even number of ripples means "yes" and an odd number of ripples means "no."  Source: The Good Spell Book by Gillian Kemp.
