Essential Oils and Everyday Blips
Essential oils can be applied directly to the body using one to six drops of oil. More is not necessarily better. Some oils may need to be diluted with a pure vegetable oil (some of these oils are cinnamon, lemongrass, oregano and thyme.) Additionally, caution should be used with oils such as clary sage, sage and fennel during pregnancy. The body absorbs oils fastest through inhalation (breathing) and second fastest through application to the feet and ears. We can enjoy daily the aroma, emotional and physical benefit that oils can provide. Here are a few common "blips" we frequently encounter and suggested oils to use. To release locked-up anger and frustration use sandalwood, also blend 4 drops lavender, 3 drops geranium, 3 drops rosewood, 3 drops rosemary, 2 drops tangerine, 1 drop spearmint, 2 drops tansy, 2 drops blue chamomile and 1 oz pure vegetable oil, apply to back of neck, wrist and heart area. Antidpressant: frankincense, lavender - apply to bottoms of feet and heart area and diffuse. Athlete's Foot: Blend: combine 10 drops thyme, 10 drops lavender, 10 drops melaleuca, mix with hand lotion and rub on feet. Flatulence (gas): bergamot, chamomile, coriander, eucalyptus, fennel, ginger, juniper, lavender, myrrh, nutmeg, peppermint, rosemary, spearmint (not for babies), tarragon, apply to stomach and abdomen. Foot Odor: Mix 1 tablespoon baking powder with 2 drops of sage and put in a plastic bag. Shake (flatten any lumps with a rolling pin) and sprinkle in shoes. Hair Loss: Blend: Combine 2 drops cinnamon bark, 4 drops cypress, 4 drops geranium, 2 drops juniper, 5 drops lavender and 3 drops rosemary. Put one drop of combined oils into 1/4 tsp of water and rub on bald area and entire scalp. ( A gentle night treatment.) Hot Flashes: Bergamot, clary sage, fennel or peppermint - apply these oils on the ankles. Source: Aromatherapy A-Z by Connie and Alan Higley, Pat Leatham.
