Stones

The stone is a symbol of longevity.  In feng shui stones are assigned to the element Earth, where rough stones symbolize yang and rounded, smooth stones, symbolize yin.  Stones stand for calm, stability and safety.  Large stones, rocks or a hill or mountain behind the house serve as protection.  It gives the house stability, a solid character and promises success.  It is however, important that stones or rocks are not seen as threatening and they don't resemble evil creatures or misshapen faces.  In a pond, a rock (yang) rising above the surface of the water (yin) acts as a balance, adding to a good yin/yang balance in the home.  Stones convey calm and safety and - if necessary - slow down or guide the flow of energy.  Polished floor tiles such as granite or marble increase the flow of chi (energy) and make vital energy available to the occupants of the house.  They are ideal as floor coverings in bathrooms and storage rooms but not in bedrooms.  Feng shui applications:  (1) To balance missing areas of irregularly shaped properties.  (2) To contain energy where a piece of land and the house built on it are on a slope, hill, or steep bank. (3) To establish harmony on a piece of land where structures are out of balance. (4) As large boulders on both sides of the entrance, to protect the house or provide a buffer from the land around it.  (5) Placed indoors, as decorative symbols of quiet and safety.  (6) As a stabilizing device in the center of the house.  Source: Feng Shui Symbols by Christine M.
