Neighborhoods

Some time ago I had an interesting conversation with a gentleman who liquidated companies - mostly in the retail industry.  When I asked him the main reason companies went out of business he said "The neighborhood changes."  Of all the things he could have said, I somewhat expected poor management, under capitalization....anything but the neighborhood!  But when I think of it, he's on to something.  How many times have you gone back to the old neighborhood and the familiar storefronts are either changed or gone.  I remember a neighborhood that was very slum-like.  The city officials decided to change the neighborhood and they leveled the old slum buildings and built nice, sturdy housing for the residents.  A few years passed and I happened to go by the renovated housing.  And much to my surprise in a few short years, it was back to being a slum!  I think what the city officials failed to do was to teach the residents how to care for their properties and to make sure they had the resources to do so.

Wow!, this was a real quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article... but what can I say... I keep putting it off and never seem to get something done.
