What's That Job Really Like?
Have you ever gone through a lengthy interview process only to find the job you thought you were accepting wasn't really the REAL job? I think I'm going to take this issue on as a "cause" in the web site I'm building for Fiftyish Diva. But for now, I'll just discuss a few thoughts about this phenomenon. When I take my car in to be serviced, the person who takes down all the symptoms and schedules the repair would on the surface appear to be a "service" person. However, that person is a "sales" person...they receive an incentive for scheduling more work for the mechanics to do than what I had intended. Or think about the real estate salesperson who shows you all those houses they have listed in the Multiple Listing Service. You would think they are helping you to find the perfect home at the perfect price. Right? WRONG! Unless they specifically say they are a buyer's agent, they are really working for the seller and trying to sell the house as quickly as possible at the highest price possible. They make nice to you because you just might be the person to make it all happen. Every work environment seems to have its version of this smoke and mirrors job function, I think it's time we found a way to make the work environment more transparent and jobs more consistent with customer expectations.
