It's fun to review the runway designer styles and then to look around me to see what we really wear.  The two worlds couldn't be farther apart.  But I also notice that as we age we often choose certain styles that add more years to our age than necessary.  Certain articles of clothing seem to be more vulnerable to this age-appropriate issue.  For instance hem lines.  Even if you have great legs, a mini skirt just seems to work better on the younger age group.  As a fifty-ish diva, I tend to like hanging just above or at the knee.  Mid-calf makes me feel "dumpy" but floor-length adds a sense of grace and luxury.  Shoes can also add years to our appearance.  I have been able to find high heels that are comfortable and stable.  Fortunately today's choices allow block-type higher heels and roomier toes on many dress shoes.  The comfort at all costs shoe may be great but those velcro straps just look "older" than I want to be.  Hair styles can be another aging decision.  The short, home-permed close to the head style just seems to add years.  I try to adopt a contemporary hair cut that's easy to maintain and change it around pretty often so that my look is fresh and not locked into a time warp.  However, the good news is that many accessories transcend any age category.   Most earrings, necklaces, bracelets and scarves add a sense of style to any age category.  The interesting thing I find is that I rarely pay attention to these timeless accessories.  Generally, I'll put on a simple pair of earrings and out the door I go.  However, I'm starting to slow that down a bit and add additional pieces of jewelry.  I find this simple step perks up any outfit and also gives me a greater sense of style.
